Who we are

Byron Harding Chair

Byron Harding

Chair

I moved to Chesham in 1989 and married the following year, and we have 2 daughters.  I have an interest in physics and astronomy, but my #1 priority is nature. Nature loss is a global disaster, and we must do everything we can to reverse this.  Chesham has a very special environment to protect, including the River Chess and surrounding countryside. I started volunteering with CEG in 2021, and after retiring in 2023 I agreed to take on the role of Chair.  I am led by the expertise and enthusiasm of our fantastic volunteers and supporters.

My wife Joan and I moved to Chesham in 1991. A few years later I joined the Environmental Group because I wanted to volunteer to keep Chesham and the River Chess looking good. Since then, I’ve been very active with the group and promoting walks both locally and in the wider Chilterns for Chesham Walkers are Welcome and the Chiltern Society. I’m very passionate about chalk streams and regularly carry out monthly health checks at 4 sites within the town.

Hi! I grew up in Chesham and lived here for twenty years. I started volunteering at CEG work parties while I was still at school, and I truly believe local groups like this are what keep our community thriving. Although I’ve since moved away, Chesham — and our River Chess — will always feel like home. I now support CEG digitally, so if you’re chatting with us on social media, it’s probably me! I work in sustainability and care deeply about protecting local biodiversity and restoring our natural spaces.

I moved to Chesham from London in 1990. I started volunteering as a way to get involved in the community and to meet people whilst doing something enjoyable and worthwhile.  I was fortunate to be elected as a Town Councillor in 2008, serving as mayor in 2012/13.  During that time, I learnt so much about what goes on in Chesham and the many marvellous volunteer groups that we are so fortunate to have. Volunteering with the Chesham Environmental Group is a great way of looking after our vital green spaces and the River Chess that runs through our town.

Georgina has been involved with CEG from the start, and does a fantastic job of keeping our supporters and volunteers updated with monthly emails detailing our work parties for the coming month, as well as notifying us of events and opportunities with other local organisations.  She is actively involved with other local groups.

Ted has lived In the Chilterns for over 50 years, firstly in Chorleywood, then Little Chalfont, and for the past 4 years in Chesham. A keen gardener and devotee of Baden Powell, he is never happier than putting on his waders and working in our local chalk stream, the River Chess.
